Vatican spreads cancer
Cardinal and priest in charge of Vatican Radio have been convicted of polluting the atmosphere with powerful electromagnetic waves. Two scientific studies have suggested a field of Vatican Radio broadcasting antennas north of Rome may have caused high rates of cancer in the area. The first, in 2001, found that magnetic fields around the transmitters were much higher than normal limits allow. (from BBC news)

John Dee's crystal ball stolen
A rare 16th-century crystal ball that belonged to John Dee, philosopher, mathematician and astrologer, and a consultant to Elizabeth I, has been stolen from the Science Museum in London. The thief also took a statement about the ball's use by the pharmacist Nicholas Culpeper, written on the reverse of ancient deed manuscripts in the mid-1600s. It's good to have the manual with you in case something goes wrong... (Times Online)

Hobbits and leprechauns do/did exist
Scientists have discovered a new and tiny species of human that lived in Indonesia at the same time our own ancestors were colonising the world, reports BBC. Some scientists speculate that species like this (Homo floresiensis) might still exist, somewhere in the unexplored tropical forest of Indonesia. More also in Nature Magazine and probably a host of other news / nature / science sites around.

Real Underground Cinema
Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital's chic 16th arrondissement. Officers admit they are at a loss to know who built or used one of Paris's most intriguing recent discoveries.
"There were two swastikas painted on the ceiling, but also celtic crosses and several stars of David, so we don't think it's extremists. Some sect or secret society, maybe. There are any number of possibilities", said a police spokesman.
The tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said. Also a restaurant and bar were found underground next to the cinema.

Spider venom - the next fashion drug?
Inmates in an Australian prison are said to have farmed deadly spiders to use their venom as a narcotic. Apparently they kept some poisonous redback spiders as pets and milked them for venom, then watered it down before injecting it to obtain a high. Reminds of certain novels by WS Burroughs...

Atlantis found! Again!
Yes, this time from the south coast of Spain. Scientist Rainer Kuehne says he may have found remains of the lost city of Atlantis. Satellite photos of southern Spain reveal features on the ground appearing to match descriptions made by Greek scholar Plato of the fabled utopia. Dr Kuehne thinks the "island" of Atlantis simply referred to a region of the southern Spanish coast destroyed by a flood between 800 BC and 500 BC.

George W. Bush - accused of rape, target of assassination, licensed to torture, losing his mind?

Curiously, virtually no newspapers had interest in reporting either the rape charge or the apparent suicide. ThoughtCrime News also reported of the recent CIA resignments a week before they happened, claiming that the CIA bosses and Colin Powell were involved in a plot to assassinate President Bush, and perhaps others. And as the plot was uncovered they had to go... Mr. Tenet's comment about quitting "for the well-being of his family" suddenly has a new undertone...

In addition to his overall moronic decisions and actions, an article, Bush's Erratic Behavior Worries White House Aides, suggests that George W. Bush is starting to lose it. About time for the USA to lose him, at least.

Red rain brings alien microbes
"In July, 2001, a meteor exploded in the air above Kerala, India. From July through September, reports were made of red rain falling.
