Vatican spreads cancer
Cardinal and priest in charge of Vatican Radio have been convicted of polluting the atmosphere with powerful electromagnetic waves. Two scientific studies have suggested a field of Vatican Radio broadcasting antennas north of Rome may have caused high rates of cancer in the area. The first, in 2001, found that magnetic fields around the transmitters were much higher than normal limits allow. (from BBC news)

John Dee's crystal ball stolen
A rare 16th-century crystal ball that belonged to John Dee, philosopher, mathematician and astrologer, and a consultant to Elizabeth I, has been stolen from the Science Museum in London. The thief also took a statement about the ball's use by the pharmacist Nicholas Culpeper, written on the reverse of ancient deed manuscripts in the mid-1600s. It's good to have the manual with you in case something goes wrong... (Times Online)

Hobbits and leprechauns do/did exist
Scientists have discovered a new and tiny species of human that lived in Indonesia at the same time our own ancestors were colonising the world, reports BBC. Some scientists speculate that species like this (Homo floresiensis) might still exist, somewhere in the unexplored tropical forest of Indonesia. More also in Nature Magazine and probably a host of other news / nature / science sites around.

In Search of the Red Demon
"Under an orange moon, Jacquie and I are 75 feet deep in the Sea of Cortez waiting for demons to appear. As we search the black water below our camera lights, a green glow begins to move toward us. Bioluminescence is signaling the approach of a shoal of Giant Humboldt squid rising to investigate us. There's no doubt they're hungry..."

Real Underground Cinema
Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital's chic 16th arrondissement. Officers admit they are at a loss to know who built or used one of Paris's most intriguing recent discoveries.
"There were two swastikas painted on the ceiling, but also celtic crosses and several stars of David, so we don't think it's extremists. Some sect or secret society, maybe. There are any number of possibilities", said a police spokesman.
The tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said. Also a restaurant and bar were found underground next to the cinema.
UPDATE!
Clandestine group reveals how it built its cinema beneath the city
There are, at most, 15 of them. Their ages range from 19 to 42, their professions from nurse to window dresser, mason to film director. And in a cave beneath the streets of Paris, they built a subterranean cinema whose discovery this week sent the city's police into a frenzy.... (from the Guardian, via DTM)

Atlantis found! Again!
Yes, this time from the south coast of Spain. Scientist Rainer Kuehne says he may have found remains of the lost city of Atlantis. Satellite photos of southern Spain reveal features on the ground appearing to match descriptions made by Greek scholar Plato of the fabled utopia. Dr Kuehne thinks the "island" of Atlantis simply referred to a region of the southern Spanish coast destroyed by a flood between 800 BC and 500 BC.

George W. Bush - accused of rape, target of assassination, licensed to torture, losing his mind?

Thoughtcrimenews.com reports:
The woman who filed charges against George W. Bush of rape "committed suicide"
Mrs. Margie Schoedinger had accused Bush of rape and other sexual crimes against both her and her husband. Curiously, virtually no newspapers had interest in reporting either the rape charge or the apparent suicide. Her time of death, the Autumn Equinox 2003, may turn on nazi-occult-skull'n'bones conspiracy theorists...

ThoughtCrime News also reported of the recent CIA resignments a week before they happened, claiming that the CIA bosses and Colin Powell were involved in a plot to assassinate President Bush, and perhaps others. And as the plot was uncovered they had to go... Mr. Tenet's comment about quitting "for the well-being of his family" suddenly has a new undertone...

In addition to his overall moronic decisions and actions, an article, Bush's Erratic Behavior Worries White House Aides, suggests that George W. Bush is starting to lose it. About time for the USA to lose him, at least.

While I'm at it, I might as well quote BBC quoting another source:
US 'not bound by torture laws'
"Torturers acting under presidential orders could not be prosecuted" ... "The president, as commander-in-chief, has the authority to approve almost any physical or psychological actions during interrogation, including torture, the newspaper reported."

Final quote for today comes from Charles Manson:
"Can the world be as sad as it seems?"

Red rain brings alien microbes
"In July, 2001, a meteor exploded in the air above Kerala, India. From July through September, reports were made of red rain falling. A local scientist, Dr. Godfrey Louis, has analyzed the rain and made the most extraordinary discovery. The red color is caused by microbes unlike any others known." This news from sciscoop.com.
From The Hindu Business Line:
"It's official. The coloured rain in some parts of Kerala was caused by the fine dust thrown up by a disintegrating meteorite. The celestial body, passing at great speed, deposited the dust in the monsoon clouds, causing the downpour of colour."
Quotes from the reports by Dr. Louis:
"The red cells under study appear to be the resting spores of an extremophilic microorganism." ...
"These chemosynthetic organisms grow optimally at an extreme high temperature of 300 degrees C in hydrothermal conditions and can metabolize inorganic and organic compounds including hydrocarbons." ...
"While these extreme hyperthermophiles contain proteins, our study shows the absence of DNA in these organisms, indicating a new primitive domain of life with alternate thermostable genetics. This new biology proves our earlier hypothesis that these microbes are of extraterrestrial origin and also supports our earlier argument that the mysterious red rain of Kerala is due to the cometary delivery of the red spores into the stratosphere above Kerala."

'Mindsight' could explain sixth sense

"Some people may be aware that a scene they are looking at has changed without being able to identify what that change is. This could be a newly discovered mode of conscious visual perception, according to the psychologist who discovered it. He has dubbed the phenomenon "mindsight"."

"Our visual system can produce a strong gut feeling that something has changed, Rensink says, even if we cannot visualise that change in our minds and cannot say what was altered or where the alteration occurred.

"I think this effect explains a lot of the belief in a sixth sense." He has no idea what physical processes generate mindsight, but says it may be possible to confirm it exists using brain scanners."

FBI Issues Alert Against Almanac Carriers

WASHINGTON - The FBI (news - web sites) is warning police nationwide to be alert for people carrying almanacs, cautioning that the popular reference books covering everything from abbreviations to weather trends could be used for terrorist planning.

Watch Out for Organic Farmers!
"In an apparently ludicrous turn of events, the FBI warned local law enforcement across the country to be on the lookout for the latest al-Qaeda manual -- the Farmer's Almanac. "

"Don't Let Them Catch You Reading!
Notes on the Inherent Evil of Almanacs

As al Qaeda threatens a new round of spectacular mayhem, and America steps up requests for armed marshals on incoming flights, the latest warning from the FBI cuts straight to the heart of the terrorist threat in America today. No, we're not talking about lethal chemical weapons owned by disgruntled militiamen – we're talking about something so dangerous it could only be possessed by a farmer, or perhaps even your grandmother. We're talking about an almanac."

Label as many people as possible as "potential terrorists" and you'll get a hold of them under regulations against terrorism, forgetting regular legistlation.

Ancient Egyptian shabti - funerary figures that represent servants in the afterlife - are causing unease for those working at Bergen Museum. The figures appear to be moving in their glass cases.

Invasion of the body snatchers!
BBC reports several rather interesting parasite cases. First, one Tanya Andrews brought herself a souvenir from Costa Rica:
"A month later she developed an extremely painful lump on her head. At first, she thought she had an abscess, but then it wriggled. At the Hospital for Tropical Diseases they recognised the problem straight away - it was the living maggot larva of a botfly."
Another one got a leech into his nostril in Nepal:
"... a brown worm-like creature emerged from his right nostril and looked around. 'I swear it had two beady eyes on it. And it came out two or three inches, looked around and then retracted. I thought it was a dream, a vision of some sort.'
"In shock, Broughton rushed off to his doctor who tried to remove the mysterious creature. But it wasn't going to give up its home easily. 'He had this thing pulled out eight or ten inches and I'm looking at it cross-eyed down the end of my nose, and he's looking at it, he has a look of absolute horror on his face. And the thing came off. And there was this leech.' "
Then, a biologist at the University of Salford intentionally swallowed the immature tapeworm cyst as part of an experiment. In twelve weeks it the tapeworm grew six feet long.

About botfly (Dermatobia hominis, the first of the cases reported), this page informs you of the ways to get rid of it once you're lucky to get one... it is a relief (?) to learn that "It only hurts when the maggot squirms and if you swim, presumably because you are cutting off its air supply."
And here's more information on the human botfly in general. A nasty bug... make sure you won't miss the rather graphic content on page two...!

Sotheby's to sell rare occult book collection
From Guardian: Books from one of the most eccentric collections in the country are being sold to settle some of the collector's debts. The Sotheby's auction next month will include around 600 books, mainly on witchcraft and the occult: a tiny part of the vast library of the late artist Robert Lenkiewicz.
The collection includes the first edition of the notorious Malleus Maleficarum, published in 1487. The article also mentions "the mummified corpse of a tramp called Edwin McKenzie, nicknamed Diogenes. He has determined that the remains, which once served as a paperweight and were found in a drawer in the studio, are of no commercial value and has handed them to the trustees."

Through the Eye of an Octopus
"Clearly, Steve was lookinghis big hooded eye followed me, and a single five-foot-long arm reached out to the hand I held above the water's surface. The arm inched up past my wrist to my shoulder, its suckers momentarily attaching and releasing like cold kisses. I couldn't help feeling as if I was being tasted, and I was, by tens of thousands of chemoreceptors. And I couldn't help feeling as if I were being studied, that a measuring intelligence lay behind that intent eye and exploring arm."

" Unexpected and insidious, the earworm slinks its way into the brain and refuses to leave. Symptoms vary, although high levels of annoyance and frustration are common. There are numerous potential treatments, but no cure.

Platon Was Right?
According to data from an American satellite, there's suggestion that the universe is a dodecahedron.

"THERE are five Platonic solids of perfect symmetry. Three, the tetrahedron, octahedron and icosahedron, have triangular faces. A fourth, the cube, has square faces. The fifth, the dodecahedron, has pentagonal faces. Plato believed that the first four corresponded to the elements of which the Greeks thought the material world was composed: fire, air, water and earth. The dodecahedron, however, corresponded to quintessence, the element of the heavens. As Plato put it, God used this solid for the whole universe, embroidering figures on it. And if the arguments of a paper in this week's Nature stand up, Plato will have been proved right. For Jean-Pierre Luminet, of the Paris Observatory, and his colleagues believe that the universe is, indeed, a dodecahedron."

Mixed-sex "chimaera" human embryo created
An experiment in the United States has created a mixed-sex human embryo.

The team involved insists that the creation of the embryo was designed to cure illness, but critics say moral and ethical standards have been breached.

The process they used creates what is known as a "chimaera" - a blend of two embryos, each of which would have a distinct genetic identities. News from BBC News.

The reactions towards the experiment have been quite negative. Some reasons behind it may be due to the medical world's attitude towards intersexed humans. More information on the subject from ISNA.

"The Last Resort"
When you have a teenager on the rampage, who are you going to turn to? In America, parents send their troubled offspring to Jamaica's Tranquility Bay - a 'behaviour-modification centre' which charges $40,000 a year to 'cure' them.
Sounds sane and healthy indeed.

Something rare: Niko Skorpio: the SKORPIOns - No Love At The First Sting is currently on Eyespark's All Night Album Replay at the Black Box Radio.
Says Eyespark, "Complex glitchy sound assemblies from Finland, with a decidedly warped/demented edge. Quirky... is... probably an understatement. This EP is a collection of Skorpio remixes and demo outtakes from 2000... and covers a fair amount of compositional ground. From scattered staccato-glitch dance music... to deep droning dark ambient... to um..
recontextualized metal. Keep listening, and you'll experience quite an intriguing range. At it's heart, this EP is pure sound experimentation... some of which works,
and some of which never even attempts to work, but all of which is exceedingly worth contemplating. This is inspired sound."
Let it be said that this is not an official release or anything like it, but a bunch or remixes and unfinished tracks never meant for a wide audience. But, there it is, go for it!
** edit: not anymore -- in these latter days you can still find it via the Some Place Else Forum. **

Know Thy Secret Ruler! #4
Ken Adachi

Ken Adachi's site, "Educate-Yourself" has an inspiring motto: "The Freedom of Knowledge, The Power of Thought" (not only is it inspiring, it's copyrighted, oops). True to the motto, Educate-Yourself is a multi-subject fountain of secret information ranging on silenced-out medical information to Adachi's main culprit for all things gone bad, the Illuminati.

The satanic Illuminati criminals are intent on killing off 85 % of the American public. Do you dare to find out how?

Know Thy Secret Ruler!

Everybody loves conspiracy theories, especially the staff of Kaaos.org. So, as a tribute (which just might grow into a series) towards all the world's conspiracy theorists, who obstinately continue to pursue their never-ending altruistic quest for the Truth in spite of all the scorn they get from self-proclaimed sceptics, we give you...

David Icke

This conspiracy theorist extraordinaire has not only found out that the Illuminati are secretly ruling the world (heck, everybody knows that), he has unearthed who, or rather, what the Illuminati are.

They are in fact a reptilian race of shape-shifters, who are just posing as humans. Remember the 1983 sci-fi series "V"? That's pretty much how things really are... The Illuminati are of extra-terrestial origins (among others, from a star system called Draco, quite fittingly) and due to needing human blood in order to keep up their human appearance, they also seem to be behind the stories about vampires.

Go and read all about... everything!

Super squid surfaces in Antarctic

A colossal squid has been caught in Antarctic waters, the first example of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni retrieved virtually intact from the surface of the ocean.

"Now we can say that it attains a size larger than the giant squid. Giant squid is no longer the largest squid that's out there. We've got something that's even larger, and not just larger but an order of magnitude meaner."

Who Needs Rights, Anyway?

With scary shades of past developments that have lead to totalitarianism before, new laws are being secretly pushed in the wake of terrorism scare in the US of A. Secret arrests, summary deportations, expanded surveillance without court oversight and the ability to strip Americans of their citizenship - just some of what a secret Domestic Security Enhancement Act would give rights to.

The act that could be called The Police State Enhancement Act of 2003, would enable authorities to declare individuals to be official enemies with whom the United States is at war, spy on activities which aren't against any laws, criminalise publishing information the government wants to hide and more.

As in earlier similar developments, large number or Americans are quite willing to trade their civil rights (who needs rights to do things you wouldn't do, but a terrorist might, right?) for merely promises of increased safety. The results don't need to match the promises - after all, when the laws have been passed, questioning them might get you deemed a criminal and a terrorist.

Even the currently ongoing whipping up a war fits the picture: a common enemy is needed to divert the attention away from what is happening at the home front and being in war is the perfect excuse for passing even stricter laws that may never get struck down. Just like the law that enabled the Japanese internment during WW2.

Justice Department Seizes "Occult" Terrorism + Piracy Site
Irreality.org.uk - "a website claiming to be the internets number one portal for the occult underworld was seized by the justice department yesterday, following a four month hearing regarding the content of the site."

The World Is Ending!

Prepare for the end of your worldly pleasures, the world will end in 57 years. This from the predictions made by Sir Isaac Newton, discovered from little-known handwritten manuscripts stored in a library in Jerusalem. Newton, considered by many being Britain's greatest scientist, being an apocalyptic thinker may come as a surprise. However, he's said to have spent some 50 years trying to predict the end of the world.

Anarchists and the fine art of torture
Inspired by the likes of Bunuel, Dali and a host of Bauhaus artists, mind-bending prison cells were built by anarchists 65 years ago during the civil war of Spain.
Most were the work of an enthusiastic French anarchist, Alphonse Laurencic, who invented a form of "psychotechnic" torture, according to the research of the historian Jose Milicua.

While you watch elsewhere, we're passing laws...
Under a rule proposed under Bush's Faith-based executive order, the government plans to take money earmarked for building houses for the poor and use it instead to fund church buildings. This is from a press release from the American Civil Liberties Union:

'WASHINGTON - The American Civil Liberties Union today criticized a federal policy change proposed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development that will allow religious groups to use taxpayer dollars -- previously set aside to house single parents, the homeless and people with AIDS -- to finance the construction and renovation of their houses of worship.'

'"This is probably the most clearly unconstitutional aspect of the White House's faith-based initiative that we've seen up to this point," said Christopher E. Anders, Legislative Counsel for the ACLUs Washington Legislative Office. "What this does is take federal money that is serving the neediest of the needy in our society and diverts it to the bricks-and-mortar construction of churches and sanctuaries and other places of worship."'

This rule proposal was quietly published on January 6th when the news media where covering the opening of the new session of Congress. Side Note: Bush seems to love to do things "under cover" like this -- expect lots of rules, regulations, and appointments to be made during the upcoming war in Iraq as the news media will be concentrating most of its limited resources on covering the war.

Follow-up for our 2002-12-07 "Raindancing to stop the drought" -news.
"The women of drought-stricken Ouyen aren't praying for rain - they're dancing. Without their clothes on. Inspired in November by the story of women in a parched part of Nepal who performed a nude rain dance which seemed to bring on the monsoon, Lynne Healy had an idea. [She] gathered a rain dance committee who have enlisted the help and support of the shire council and business sponsorship and, now . . . have been inundated by women wanting to join in the ritual, planned for early March. To date there are 70 local women and more than 100 others from elsewhere who have pledged to take part. The youngest are teenagers - the oldest, 73."

The Most Unlucky Church in the World

"The church was wrecked by two earthquakes, a flood, and a landslide - all of which happened while it was still being built. It later became an opium den and after it was abandoned most of the remains were washed into the sea."

Looking at this from a Finnish perspective, there are local stories about churches that could not be built where they were intended to, originally. There are even accounts of what got built during the day being taken down during the night. By whom? Spirits of the land, some say. Maybe this particular unlucky church was also found offensive by the spirits of the land it was being built on, or it wasn't otherwise just meant to be built there. Think about it, if you will.
